Library Service Updates (November 2024)

Library Orientation 2024-2025

Time flies! Another new academic year has begun. An orientation programme organized by the Library ran from mid-August to mid-September 2024, mainly to familiarize students who were new to the SFU community with our key services, Library Orientation (Booth)subject-specific resources and study facilities.

By setting up a booth during the registration days, posting advertisements around campus and sending out promotional e-mails, we were able to draw over 280 new students to register for the orientation sessions which were conducted either online or face-to-face. All attendees were automatically entered into a lucky draw to get a chance to win cash coupons sponsored by SFU.

In late September, eight lucky draw winners received their gifts in a simple prize presentation ceremony held at the Learning Commons.

After the commencement of the academic year 2024-25, the Library continued to collaborate with the Schools/Departments to organize orientation and workshops for new students (full-time and part-time). Details can be referred to Library Skills Workshops 2024-25.

Enhanced Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Service

Interlibrary Loan

In response to the need for stronger support for the teaching and research activities of the staff, the Library has broadened the range of its interlibrary loan (ILL) service to include the acquisition of e-book chapters and e-journal articles from both local and overseas university libraries. With only a few clicks, users may be able to get hold of materials that are not available in our Library but are held by other institutions. Information on the actual procedures can be found at the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Request guide.

Workshops on Research Skills for Academic and Research Staff

Nursing Staff Workshop

Two customised workshops on research skills, which are intended for the academic and research staff in nursing and physiotherapy, were held in August 2024 upon request. In addition to an introduction to advanced search skills, there was a demonstration of how to use the Discovery Search platform and specific e-databases to search for subject-specific resources. Each participant was assigned a computer to perform advanced searches so that he/she could gain some hands-on experience.

Olympics and Humanities & Professor Leo Lee’s Book Launch Event

Jointly organized by the School of Humanities, the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong & Macau, Alliance Française de Hong Kong, the Library and the Student Affairs Office, the Olympics and Humanities: Photo Exhibition and French Culture Day took place on 28 June 2024 in anticipation of the Paris Olympic Games that would kick off in late July 2024. Through such special events as the French Culture Workshop and the Non-local Students’ Cultural Sharing Session, we were able not only to highlight the key features of the history and culture of France but also to encourage exchanges among local and non-local students in the SFU community.

The Library was chosen as the venue for a photo exhibition featuring the memorable and pleasurable moments of the previous Olympics Games.

The Library also played an active part in a landmark event jointly organized by the School of Humanities and the Museum of Hong Kong Literature, an event which was entitled “小說真好玩兒 —— 李歐梵「舊」書發佈會” and which was held on 26 July 2024. A great variety of publications by Professor Leo Lee Ou-fan, an internationally renowned scholar, were exhibited at the book launch to give the audience a glimpse of his unique insights into contemporary Chinese literature. As a follow-up, Professor Lee’s works were put on display in the Library in August.

Relocation of Staff Publications Area

To better showcase the academic achievements of the faculty and researchers of SFU, the Library has relocated the entire collection of staff publications to a more spacious area at the Learning Commons. Users will now be able to comfortably browse the scholarly works of both current and former members of staff.

Large TV Screen Displaying SFU History

The Library has also updated the e-resources slideshow, which is viewable on the large TV screen installed in the area. Information on the history of SFU and the development of the Library has been included. This eye-catching visual display can give users, especially newcomers, a greater understanding of the long journey which our institute has gone through to becoming the first Catholic university in Hong Kong.

Re-set the Reserve Collection Area

Self-Checkout Station and Printer

To make students easily borrow the course reserve collection, the Library setup a self-checkout station and a multi-function photocopier / printer in the Reserve Collection area at the CBCC Library. Users can now borrow designated course readings themselves using the self-checkout station or make a copy of printed work for self-study purposes.

e-Resources Activities in 2024 – Lucky Draw Winners

As the Chinese saying goes, “Good things come in pairs”.

Two SFU staff members won an Apple Watch and a cash coupon respectively in the lucky draw in connection with the online Emerald Journal Reading Quiz Competition titled “The Rise of Gen Z Workforce” in May 2024. Besides, six members of staff and students each won an e-gift card in the “Read-Share-Win Prizes” Contest organized by PressReader from March to May 2024.

These two activities have helped promote the use of e-resources that could benefit teaching, learning and research. The following e-databases are highly recommended and can be accessed via the A-Z List e-Databases:

Our warmest congratulations to all the winners. Please stay tuned to the next e-resources competitions!
